How Long Does It Take to Become a Surgical Technician?

Becoming a Surgical Technician is a rewarding career choice for those interested in the medical field but who may not want to commit to the extensive education required to become a surgeon or nurse. Surgical Technicians, also known as Surgical Technologists or Operating Room Technicians, play a vital role in the operating room, ensuring that surgeries are conducted smoothly and safely. But how long does it take to become a Surgical Technician? It can actually be quicker than you may think! This article will break down the education, certification, and experience needed to enter this profession. I will also share my recommendation for the best route to become a Surgical Technician.
Educational Requirements
The first step to becoming a Surgical Technician is to complete a postsecondary education program in surgical technology. These programs are typically offered at community colleges, technical schools, and some universities. The length of these programs can vary, but most take between 12 and 24 months to complete. I hope I didn't just lose you there if you want something faster; keep reading.
1. Certificate or Diploma Programs from a Community College: These are shorter than a university approach typically lasting anywhere from 12 to 18 months. They provide the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to start working as a Surgical Technician. These programs focus on anatomy, medical terminology, surgical procedures, and hands-on training in a clinical setting.
2. Associate Degree Programs: An Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Surgical Technology is a more comprehensive option usually taking about 24 months or more to complete. These programs offer a more in-depth education, including general education courses alongside the surgical technology curriculum. You would think having an associates degree in surgical technology would give you an edge in hiring or pay, but actually, it doesn't. Bummer right?
3. My favorite option - Online Certificate Course: An online course generally offer greater flexibility than other programs. However, not all online courses are the same. The cost can fluctuate widely, accreditation is usually a big question, and most do not coordinate an externship for you. So beware!
Out of the 3 paths I mentioned, I always recommend Preppy which is an accredited online course offering flexibility, is cheaper than all other options, and provides you with an externship so you don't have to worry about getting your hands on experience taken care of. Also, with Preppy, you can complete the Surgical Technician program in as little as 4 months! For more on Preppy click here.
Certification
While certification is not always required to work as a Surgical Technician, it is highly recommended and often preferred by employers. There are 3 widely recognized certification agencies which are: the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), and American Allied Health (AAH).
To be eligible for the NBSTSA exam, candidates must graduate from an accredited surgical technology program that is accredited by CAAHEP. For NCCT and AAH, there is more flexibility in accredited programs to choose from. Preparing for and passing the Surgical Technician exam usually takes a few months after graduation. Some students opt to take review courses or practice exams to increase their chances of passing on the first attempt. Once certified, Surgical Technicians must maintain their certification through continuing education or reexamination every few years depending on the certification agency.
Clinical Experience and On-the-Job Training
In addition to formal education and certification, gaining clinical experience is crucial. A good portion of surgical technology programs include a clinical externship, where students work in a real operating room setting under the supervision of experienced professionals. This hands-on experience is invaluable for building confidence and competence in the role. Without hands on experience, employers will be reluctant to hire you.
After securing a job, new Surgical Technicians typically undergo on-the-job training to better acquaint them to the ins and outs of how and what types of surgery is performed in that facility. This training can last several weeks to a few months, depending on the complexity of the surgeries performed and the policies of the employing hospital or surgical center.
Timeline Summary
1. Education: 4-24 months (depending on the program chosen)
2. Certification Preparation: 2-3 months (optional but recommended)
3. On-the-Job Training: 1-3 months (varies by employer)
In total, the process of becoming a surgical technician typically takes anywhere from 6ish months to 2.5 years. This timeline can vary depending on the program chosen, individual’s pace in completing educational requirements and time to obtain certification.
Career Advancement
While becoming a Surgical Technician can be achieved relatively quickly, there are opportunities for advancement. With experience, Surgical Technicians can take on more complex roles, such as Surgical First Assistant, or move into related fields like surgical equipment sales or medical education. Additional certifications and continuing education can further enhance career prospects.
Conclusion
In summary, becoming a surgical technician is a relatively short yet intensive process that typically takes between 6 months and 2.5 years. This career offers a fast track into the healthcare industry, with opportunities for growth and specialization over time. For those interested in a hands-on role in the operating room, surgical technology offers a fulfilling and dynamic career path.

from 211 reviewsI recently completed the Sterile Processing Guy course online and was extremely impressed. The content was clear, well-organized, and easy to follow. It helped me better understand important concepts like decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization. I appreciated how practical and informative the lessons were, it definitely made studying for certification feel more manageable. I highly recommend this course to anyone pursuing a career in sterile processing!
I won’t lie, I failed the first time around. So I decided to buy this practice test and I passed with flying colors my second go. Highly recommend to anyone interested in the CER, it helped a lot!
The flash card quality is amazing! Bravo sir! The card quality is way above average, questions are great! I’m still learning, utilizing these cards and your practice tests. Thanks for all the info!
I passed the CRCST exam. Taking reg sterile guy practice test over and over definitely helped get the job done.
This certification prep course is a must. Great videos with a lot of information and plenty of of practice exams.
These flashcards are so helpful and well put together. Highly recommend!
I'm really happy that I purchased the SP practice exam. I love how if you answer the question incorrectly, the correct answer will include the page number of the text book to find the answer. The questions are literally based on the textbook. I suggested "The Sterile Processing Guy" to my friend that is studying for the exam as well.
Love. The digital product.Haven't got too far into it yet. I'm hoping that I'll be able to go back into and review it.
I ordered these flashcards and I’ve gone through them since I received it! This is exactly what I needed to help me pass my exam! Thank you so much! These flashcards are very good quality as well!!
I’m learning so many things while watching the videos and doing practice tests after each lesson! I was worried about not being able to grasp anything but the tests after each lesson really solidify the information I learned! Thank you so much for this way of teaching!
I purchased the course, the index cards and the extra quizzes. I don't have the book nor did I take any classes or go to any programs. My schedule was too busy, so I self studied with Brandon's incredible bundles. I HIGHLY recommend his course and the extra quizzes were chef's kiss.
PS: the combination of the course outline, the cheat sheets AND the videos is the key to really understanding the material. Thanks Brandon!
Very comprehensive and scholarly presented . Kudos Brandon!
The practice test really helped prepare for the certification test!
Hi these cards are of quality and value easy to learn and just amazing thanks
I just registered class about one week ago, and finished two modules. I have to say this 101 class make the process of preparing the CRCST exam much more easier. I mean each module is kind of short but full of necessary information for the exam and follow up with some practice questions with an answer page. I also have flash cards on the way, cannot wait to see it!!! I am planning to take my exam no later than August probably in the middle of August, hope I can pass it on my first attempt. 🙏
